High dividend yield counters ( > 7% - 10%) on Bursa Malaysia are currently drawing significant retail interest. However, from an equity research standpoint, a high trailing dividend yield can often be a mathematical illusion—caused either by a plummeting stock price or one-off non-operating land / asset disposal gains.

Three quantitative checks to perform before adding a high-yield counter to your dividend portfolio:

• Free Cash Flow (FCF) Coverage of Dividends: Verify whether dividend payouts are funded by organic operational cash flow rather than balance sheet debt or asset sales: FCF Dividend Coverage = Free Cash Flow / Total Dividends Paid ≥ 1.2x.  A coverage ratio below 1.0x indicates the company is consuming cash reserves or taking on debt to maintain dividends.

• Earnings Payout Ratio vs CAPEX Reinvestment: Look for a sustainable payout ratio between 50% - 70%. Companies paying out >100% of earnings continuously sacrifice future maintenance capital expenditure (CAPEX), causing long-term business decay.

• Debt Profile & Net Gearing Threshold: Ensure Net Debt / EBITDA remains below 2.0x. In a higher-for-longer interest rate regime, over-leveraged companies will eventually cut dividend distributions to service interest expenses.
