Hi fellow investors,

When screening for value counters trading at low P/E or P/B multiples on Bursa Malaysia, investors often run the risk of buying into "value traps"—companies that appear cheap on paper but face structural margin erosion, deteriorating balance sheets, or poor capital allocation.

Three quantitative filters to audit before classifying a stock as a genuine value opportunity:

Free Cash Flow Yield vs Net Profit: A low P/E ratio is meaningless if net profit fails to convert into operational cash flows. Ensure the Free Cash Flow (FCF) Yield (FCF / Market Cap) exceeds 8% to confirm genuine earnings quality and cash conversion.

ROIC vs WACC Spread: Verify whether the business generates Return on Invested Capital (ROIC) above its Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC). A cheap stock destroying capital (ROIC < WACC) will perpetually trade at a discount.

Dividend Sustainability & Balance Sheet Coverage: Check if accumulated cash reserves can support dividend payouts during economic downcycles. Look for a Net Cash balance or Net Debt/EBITDA < 1.5x.

True value investing requires balance sheet strength and earnings persistence. What key metrics do you rely on to filter out value traps when screening stocks on malaysiastock.biz?
