Hi fellow investors,

When chasing high dividend yields on Bursa Malaysia, relying purely on trailing dividend yield percentages often masks structural balance sheet risks. A high yield can frequently be an illusion caused by a falling share price or unsustainable payouts funded by asset disposals and floating-rate debt.

Three quantitative stress-tests used by institutional funds to verify dividend sustainability:

Free Cash Flow (FCF) Coverage Ratio: Ensure FCF easily covers dividend distributions (FCF / Dividends Paid ≥ 1.5x). Dividends funded through operating cash flow are resilient; those funded through debt accumulation precede dividend cuts.

Net Debt to EBITDA & Interest Coverage: Check if rising debt service costs are eroding net margins. Maintain a safety margin of {Net Debt / EBITDA < 2.5x} and Interest Coverage > 4.0x.

Payout Ratio Realism: Target a payout ratio between 50% - 75% of core earnings. Payout ratios exceeding 90% leave zero buffer for maintenance capital expenditure or unexpected revenue contractions.

Protecting initial principal is the foundation of compound yield. What dividend sustainability metrics do you prioritize when building an income portfolio on Bursa?
