Hi fellow investors,

Screening for low P/E or low P/B ratios is often the starting point for value investing. However, buying deeply discounted counters without analyzing business fundamentals frequently leads to a "value trap"—where low valuations reflect structural decline rather than temporary mispricing.

From a systematic equity analysis perspective, here are 3 core filters to verify a genuine Margin of Safety:

  • Return on Equity (ROE) Stability: A low valuation counter must demonstrate consistent ROE generation across business cycles to ensure capital isn't eroding over time.

  • Balance Sheet Strength & Free Cash Flow: Low multiples mean little if debt servicing eats up operating cash. Prioritize resilient free cash flow over paper net profits.

  • Earnings Quality & Moat: Distinguish between cyclical peak earnings (which artificially depress P/E) and sustainable moat-driven earnings power.

True value is determined by future cash generation discounted to the present, not just low historical multiples.

How do you differentiate between cheap stock traps and true value counters in your stock filter?
