yeahTM plans RM1.073b capital repaymentyeah

Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) has proposed a capital repayment to its shareholders of about RM1.073 billion or 30 sen a share.

In a filing to Bursa Malaysia today, the company said the proposed capital repayment would be funded by its existing cash balance of RM4.213 billion as at Dec 31, 2011.

TM said together with the final single-tier dividend for 2011 financial year of 9.8 sen per share, total cash distribution to shareholders would amount to about RM1.423 billion, or 39.8 sen per share.

TM has also proposed to make the corresponding amendments to its Memorandum and Articles of Association to facilitate the proposed capital repayment.

The proposed capital repayment was in line with its objectives of capital management framework which includes returning cash in excess of its requirement to shareholders, it said.

"This was after taking into consideration our level of cash, business prospects, projected levels of capital expenditure and investment plans as well as current and expected obligations.

"This is an opportune time to implement the proposed capital repayment in view of our strong cash position as a result of disposals of non-core assets undertaken by the group and/or subsidiaries," TM added.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the proposed capital repayment is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2012.

Telekom Malaysia Bhd said fourth-quarter net income rose to RM598.3 million from RM400.6 million a year earlier, according to an exchange filing today.

  • Upgrading to Trading Buy. Following the enforcement of the MSAP, we project FY18F core earnings to fall by 26% YoY due to lower Unifi ARPU and revenue from wholesale business. Meanwhile, TM could be excluded as a component stock of the FBMKLCI in the upcoming review. All said, we believe its share price has priced in all the negative news. Potential re rating catalyst includes TM continuing its cost-cutting efforts that could lead to greater margin improvement. Also, given the decline in future earnings, TM’s capex is likely to be reduced and this should lead to lower depreciation charges in the future. Although the government has hinted on the possibility of foreign participation, without providing any significant incentives we reckon that it would be a challenge to attract foreign competition into the sub-urban/rural connectivity projects (considering that such projects require heavy capex and has low return on investment). Trading at only 14x forward PER and 1.2x P/BV, TM’s valuation looks compelling. We upgrade the stock to Trading Buy with a revised TP of RM3.60.
